How to care for Granite & Stone

Natural stone is porous, which requires special care and attention. To keep granite and other stone surfaces looking their best, just remember these three little words: Clean. Polish. Seal.

Cleaning Granite & Stone

Many household cleaners, including glass, abrasive, and all-purpose, can dull or damage granite and stone. To properly clean and protect these surfaces, you need to use a pH-neutral formula specifically made for them. A perfect example is Weiman Granite & Stone Daily Cleaner & Polish Spray.

Designed to penetrate stone and lift out soil, dust, and dirt, Weiman makes daily maintenance easy. And while you should always clean up spills immediately, it also helps prevent stains from absorbing into stone.

To clean your stone simply, spray Weiman Granite & Stone Daily Cleaner & Polish onto the surface and wipe with a clean, soft cloth.

Polishing Granite & Stone

For added shine and protection, be sure to polish your countertops weekly with Weiman Granite & Stone Polish. It helps prevent dulling, glass ring stains, and streaks. Plus, it enhances the natural color of your stone.

How to use Weiman Granite & Stone Polish:

  1. Shake the bottle and apply liberally to granite/stone.
  2. Wipe with a dry, clean cloth in a circular motion.
  3. Once the polish has dried to a haze, buff away with another clean cloth.

Sealing Granite & Stone

Sealing is the most important step in preserving the beauty of granite. So instead of a simple coating sealer, use a penetrating sealer, like Weiman Granite & Stone Sealer. It forms flexible, molecular links in each pore of granite/stone, protecting the surface so stains can’t be absorbed.

How to use Weiman Granite & Stone Sealer:

  1. Prep the surface by cleaning it using the above directions, then allow it to dry completely (typically about 12 hours).
  2. Lightly shake the sealer bottle and spray across the surface, thoroughly saturating it.
  3. Wait 5 minutes. Reapply. Do not allow the first application to dry before applying the second. Certain colors will require additional applications.
  4. Wait another 5 minutes. Wipe off the excess sealer with a cloth. If excess dries on the surface and hazing appears, spray additional sealer onto that area and wipe up immediately.
  5. After you’re done, keep the stone surface dry for 24 hours so the seal can completely cure and bond with the pores of the stone.
  6. Once cured, check the seal by performing the water test (see below) on all key areas of the surface.

How often do you need to reseal?

Though it varies based on your stone and amount of use, a good rule of thumb is 6–12 months.

Make sure to test the seal on high-use areas frequently to ensure they’re protected. Simply sprinkle a little water across the surface and wait about 15 minutes. If the water sits on top of the stone, then it is sealed properly. If the water creates dark spots on the stone, then it is time to re-seal.

Don’t worry if you seal on top of an existing seal. That’s just extra protection!

Sealing Tips:

  • Seal sinks and countertops more often because the seal on high-use surfaces can wear out faster than normal. And don’t forget to seal under the lips of sinks!
  • Countertop edges require at least 2 applications. Seal edges until there is no water absorption.
  • Please note, the sealer will not effect the finish of your granite/stone and will not add shine.
